Mark 13:1-2
The 13th chapter of Mark is about the future. If you have an NIV bible, the section title is ‘Signs of the End of the Age’ (sounds a little ominous). So, the next few lessons will be about the Tribulation. I’m excited about this, because I like the reminder that this world is not forever. In fact, I am writing today’s lesson in my truck while waiting for my husband to finish an interview. We are in Carthage, Illinois, and the thought of having to move here makes me slightly sick to my stomach. But, I know that I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me, and I know that this world is not my home. How do I know this? Because God’s Word says so! The principle today is that Jesus knows every detail in the future and His totally trustworthy words will be fulfilled literally. The disciples were amazed by the pretty temple. It must have been truly magnificent to look at, but Jesus burst their little bubble by informing them that the temple would someday be destroyed. This is what sparks the discussion of the end of the Earth. How comforting to have a God that is in total control! He knows the future. He knows everything! Wow, I think my thoughts today are all over the place. I’ll summarize for you.
- This world is not forever.
- God’s Word is truth, and Jesus’ words will be fulfilled.
- God is in control.
Principle: Jesus knows every detail in the future and His totally trustworthy words will be fulfilled literally.
Application:
1. Do I believe Jesus’ words will come true? If so, how will I order my life today?
2. How am I studying His words in order to be prepared for the future?
3. In what temporary things am I trusting instead of God?

The disciples sound like us today, only instead of being impressed with the temple, we say things such as "look at my new flat screen TV!" "Check out my new shoes!" "I got a new car!" Question 3 asks what temporary things I am trusting. For me the issue isn't so much what I am trusting, but what impresses me. I need to be more careful not to be impressed (like the disciples) with temporary things of this world and instead be impressed with the eternal things of God.
ReplyDeleteThis brings to my mind some words from a song:
ReplyDelete"This world is not my home,
I'm just a passing through,
If heaven's not my home
Then Lord what will I do"
I would like to remember this song when "this world" gets a little crazy. Carthage, Illinois would sure qualify!!
Question #2... How am I studying His words in order to be prepared for the future? This
again makes me thankful for BSF and this study. The method used for this type of study make scripture so real and is so thought provoking. I need to be telling more people what it has done for me and keep encourage them to give it a try.
