Day 66

July 29
Mark 12:83-40

Finally Jesus gets to ask a question! And, of course, He asks the most important one of all. Who is the Messiah? "What do you think about the Messiah? Whose son is he?" (Matthew 22:42b NLT) The whole bible, everything we believe in comes back to this one question. It is the basis of our salvation. So what is the answer? Who is Jesus? Jesus is both man and God. The Jews believed that Jesus was a descendant of David. "For the scriptures clearly state that the Messiah will be born of the royal line David, in Bethlehem, the village where King David was born." (John 4:42 NLT) So, Jesus is the Son of man. But the Jews were having trouble with the other side of it. Jesus is also the Son of God. In today's scripture He quotes Psalm 110:1. "The Lord said to my Lord..." The first Lord in this scripture is God, and the second refers to the Messiah. So, how can this be possible? Well, we know from the books of Luke and Matthew the story of Jesus' virgin birth. "All right then, the Lord himself will give you the sign. Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son and will call him Immanuel (which means 'God is with us')." (Isaiah 7:14 NLT) Jesus came from a human, and from God. This is one of those things that I have known all my life, but it still blows me away! What an amazing Jesus we have!

Principle: The Messiah is both God (David's Lord) and man (David's son)

Application:
1. Do I, by the study of the Scriptures, know who Jesus claims to be?
2. How can the knowledge that Jesus is both God and man help me today?
3. Does my increasing knowledge of Jesus give me delight and cause me to worship Him as Lord?

4 comments:

  1. Here we have another peek at Jesus using scripture. Not many students of the Bible would have picked up on the truth that Jesus gleaned from the Psalm he quotes. The mind of Jesus was saturated with God's word. Because of this he knew what was true of himself. He was also able to see what is not true: the men who claimed to be godly leaders were in fact not. The people we know have opinions of us, some good and some not so good. What really matters is what Jesus sees in our hearts. He knows who He is and He knows who we are. May the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength, and my redeemer.

  2. The fact that Jesus is both the son of God AND the son of man is one of the things that I think is so cool about him and it may be the main thing that sets him apart from all other spiritual figures. Jesus has literally and figuratively "bridged the gap" and that gives me great comfort.

  3. Question #3 Does my increasing knowledge of Jesus give me delight and cause me to worship Him as Lord? You bet it does! I am so grateful that my husband followed God’s leading to visit a large church and that the ladies in the choir invited me to BSF and this Bible study. It has made the biggest change in my desire to learn God’s Word. I feel the “delight” of learning scripture just like when I first was saved. And now to have the privilege to sing in a wonderful Choir that is accompanied by an amazing orchestra is like icing on the cake. (not to mention the great teaching we get from the pulpit! Thanks Bro. John). Church has again become VERY worshipful And it gives me the desire to tell everyone!

  4. How ironic…My security word was "quest" and that is exactly how I feel…I’m on a quest to learn all I can about our Lord. I love when that kind of “coincidence” happens!!
