Mark 6:17-29
Today as I was waiting for my husband to fill the gas tank, I could see into the gas station/restaurant. There was a girl who was probably about 15 eating a piece of pizza with her mouth wide open. She was seriously chewing like a cow. I thought to myself, “How could any parent allow their child to eat like that?” Then I got a good look at the dad. And what do you know…he was chewing his cud too. The things that we do affect those around us, especially our family and friends. Today’s verses are an example of how a parent’s sin can cause a child to sin. Herodias was holding a grudge against John the Baptist, because John had said something she didn’t agree with. Then when Herodias’ daughter was granted a prize, Herodias told her to have John beheaded. This would never have happened if Herodias was not holding on to her sin. Ultimately every person is responsible for their own actions. But we need to be aware of how the things we are doing are affecting our children, friends, and even strangers. So next time you’re chowing down on a slice of gas station pizza…..remember someone is always watching!
Principle: Unconfessed sin multiplies and affects others.
Application:
1. From what unconfessed sins will I repent?
2. In what ways are my words and actions causing my children and grandchildren to sin?
3. Of what foolish, prideful promise will repent?

what a great reminder, someone is always watching our example. I pray that I will always lead a life that is pleasing to God and a positive example to any who may be watching.
ReplyDeleteThis passage reminds me that there is a cost for doing God's will. John the Baptist makes the ultimate sacrifice and ends an amazing life of dedication to God. Later at his transfiguration, Jesus would tell his disciples that John was His Elijah, and yet, unlike the prophet who went up to heaven in a chariot of fire, John's head ends up on a platter. This death is a preview that the Messiah will also die, although his disciples won't understand that until afterward. Lord, may I be willing to do Your will, even when it is costly.
